Social enterprises differ from commercial enterprises in that they have a social mission and re-invest surpluses back into the organisation. A proportion of their income comes from trading in goods or services. Social enterprise has a long-standing presence in Ireland, building on deep roots of community organisation, self-help and enthusiasm for enterprise.

A Social Enterprise at work – The Speedpak Group

Speedpak is one of Ireland’s leading social enterprises. Based in north Dublin it employs and trains over 80 people annually.  It operates two successful commercial businesses, Speedpak Contract Services and Shamrock Rosettes, that provide work opportunities to end long-term unemployment. It has doubled its commercial business over the past five years and delivers a range of major and minor accreditations annually through innovative workplace training programmes.
